Fixing Ingrown Toenails

Painful Ingrown ToenailWhen it comes to ingrown toenails, we here this line a lot: “just fix it, doc.”

Ingrown toenails—a condition in which the corner or edge of a nail starts to dig painfully into the surrounding flesh—are a major, recurring problem for many of all ages, with up to 3 million cases per year in the United States alone. We know how frustrating it can be, but the good news is that ingrown toenails can be fixed, permanently if necessary, via a relatively minor surgical procedure. It could be the answer you’re looking for after years of pain and embarrassment.

The procedure usually takes no more than 30 to 45 minutes, can be performed right from the comfort of our office, and requires no hospital stay—you can go home right afterward. Only local anesthetic is required.

During the appointment, your doctor will carefully cut out and remove the corner or edge of the nail. We’ll also prescribe any antibiotics or other medications that may be necessary to deal with infection or pain, bandage you up, and send you on your way. That’s it! Pain relief is almost immediate, and while it’ll take a couple of weeks for the toe to fully heal, you should be able to go back to normal activities within 24-48 hours.

For a more permanent solution—often advised for people with chronic ingrown toenail trouble—we can also remove a portion of the growth center along the problematic edge of the nail. After this procedure, the nail won’t ever grow back along that edge, meaning you won’t ever have to deal with an ingrown toenail in that spot again, either.
